Editorial: ‘Sunnier skies’

Romil_PatelAs a number of Asian countries emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, in stark contrast to the West, sunnier skies lie ahead as managers expect economic recovery to continue for the rest of the year and into 2021. What will begin to take shape is the much-discussed but not yet defined “new normal”. Tackling the coronavirus effectively has left a number of Asian economies in good shape, and a knock-on effect of the crisis will be the furtherance of ESG issues to bring about long-lasting impact both globally and in Asia. In what is recognised as the “Asian century”, the region will offer investors sizeable opportunities, particularly with greater access to China. However, it also gives certain hubs an advantageous and “unique” role to play in developing ESG in the region. While the Asian market is well-poised to continue to mature, sizeable challenges still exist with respect to the significant underinvestment in infrastructure – about half of what is needed, in fact, to keep pace with climate change. The question is: can Asia set the bar for quality, stimulate economic growth and respond to what remains the biggest challenge in the climate crisis – and, by extension, biodiversity loss?
